Senior Services
Geriatric Social Work Services in Met Council Housing
Senior Services aids the aging residents who live in the Met Council’s inclusionary housing sites throughout the five boroughs. Social workers provide on-site case management.
Services that social workers provide include:
Assistance with applying and re-certifying for benefits
Information and referral to other Met Council programs (such as the food pantry network, benefits enrollment, and crisis services)
Long-term care planning
Short-term counseling
The social workers also plan workshops for the residents on issues of interest to seniors and plan periodic building get-togethers and social events to combat isolation.
Holiday celebrations and some recreational programs are offered in conjunction with Met Council’s volunteer department
Safety Net Program
The Safety Net Program is designed to assist clients experiencing chronic crisis situations. Social workers stationed at various sites throughout the city provide ongoing case management services to adults (with a focus on older adults) and can assist with applications for benefits and entitlements, referrals for legal assistance, one-time emergency financial assistance, and short term supportive counseling. The program’s goal is to provide services in the client’s community, or in the case of homebound older adults in their home, so that a crisis situation can be stabilized and the necessary ongoing services and supports can be put into place
